how to kill a tree

She was sick.  She was ugly.  She was bug infested.
I said farewell to her...

chop, chop, chop sorry

Paint the cuts with Round-Up... so sorry

When I'm certain she's gone, I'll plant a clematis up against my new 3D trellis.

Shhh...no one has to know.

verbena bonariensis

Now, back to peace and quiet...

around the back garden - late August

Come walk around my back yard with me...

Aster x frikartii 'Monch'

A wonderful aster with large flowers -my favorite color.

Sedum telephium  'Matrona'

Started as a cutting from a friend's garden.
Lovely red stems.

Rudbeckia triloba

'Brown-eyed Susan', she is a biannual here.

Caryopteris 'Worcester Gold'

Dark purple blue flowers look great against the golden foliage.
Compact habit.

Chrysanthemum x rubellum 'Clara Curtis'

Slightly fragrant Clara Curtis mum blooms on and on from July to frost.
Politely spreads here.

Lysimachia clethroides  Gooseneck Loosestrife

This is her second year.
She didn't bloom with the well known goose-neck form (which I love),
but I'm just so happy that she survived our dry climate.
It may be too aggressive for wetter region.

dinner for everyone

Normally, I'd be dancing with joy when we have an early crop of plentiful apples.
It's unfortunate that 90% of the fruits are damaged and deformed by hail.

I'll harvest enough to make a pie, but leave the rest for the birds and the rabbits.

I gathered all the dropped apples in a basket for the rabbits.

I know that I'm basically inviting them by doing this, but I can't make myself throw the apples away, and they come anyway.

Come get your apples, bunny rabbits, but please leave my hosta plants alone!

late summer

 Cosmos at dusk.
Plain, uncomplicated, one of my favorites.

Dog run border.
Thanks to our new neighbor's runoff water,
more flowers came back this year.

vintage credenza

I found it!

I wanted a sideboard-ish storage unit, and
I was about to visit a new furniture store after I had no luck at a flea market.

We have several antique/vintage/interior decoration/gift shops in town.
( my husband may add /junk)

They've started to carry more furniture lately.
Maybe because the young people seem to prefer IKEA-ish style -?
Or, maybe more people are downsizing -?

We call the guest bedroom No.2 "my room" because it tends to accumulate my ongoing staff like
kitting projects, gardening books, laptop and so on.
I needed a storage unit to house them effectively.

I normally like more clean design, but I knew I had what I wanted when my husband said
"It looks like Grandma's furniture".

Yes, I'd like to make this room to go with our Grandma's quilt!

What do you think?  Does it look like your grandma's furniture?

newcomers

新来者

Clematis 'Rooguchi' & Rosa 'Night Owl'  (July 2012)

They are newcomers.
It seems that people can't say enough nice things about Japanese born clematis 'Rooguchi'
(sometimes spelled 'Roguchi' or 'Rouguchi').

Rosa 'Night Owl" is a climber.
I was disappointed to see this bright fuchsia -it was supposed to be dark purple.
Rumor has it that the flowers get darker as the plant gets bigger.
In Colorado, maybe in five years?

I was able to plant the rose somehow, but the clematis is still in a pot.
I walked around with it way too long, and still couldn't decide where to plant.

The air is a little cooler now.
I hope I can give you a nice home very soon, Rooguchi.

~ ~ ~

Finally!

Olympics

Dianthus "First Love"

Olympics -came and went fast, didn't it?
It was such a treat to witness Olympians giving everything they have for their countries.

Congratulations to all Olympians!

Did you know that Colorado stunned the world by turning down Olympics?

Coloradans are were environmentally-conscious people -I'm not surprised.

~ ~ ~

おまけ /  a little extra

A surprise anniversary gift; my medal ....equivalent.

Thank you.

going green

エコに

Today's Temp
High:89ºF/31.6ºC, Low:54ºF/12.2ºC

Our ceiling fans are in full use during the summer since I don't like using the air conditioner unless I have to, but we wanted to go one step further and take advantage of our cool Colorado nights.
We've installed a whole-house attic fan!

When you turn it on, the fan exhausts air from the house, and cool outside air is drawn in from open windows, replacing it.
We have a ranch house with ten foot high ceiling, and needed a big 42 inch attic fan.

We've been using it for 1~2 hrs in mornings and evenings, and the house stays comfortably cool as long as I keep our windows and blinds closed.
I'm sure that our low humidity climate is a big factor for using something like this effectively.

Anyway, I'm feeling better going a little greener these days.

flea market

Saturday was a fabulously cool day.
We decided to take our dog to a local flea market.

I want this one and that one!

 Halloween decorations -already? !

There were many old tin buckets, watering cans and garden tools charmingly displayed.

It's always fun to visit a flea market.

Salvia pitcheri

Back home, there was a hint of fall in the air,
a pitcher's blue sage was starting to bloom -already?!

Slowdown, Autumn!

summer alliums

Allium senescens

Allium tuberosum

It hailed again.
To tell you the truth, I was writing a really negative blog.

I felt like "throw in the towel".
Or, "throw the spoon" in Japanese.
In ancient times doctors and pharmacists assigned to mix the substances used to make medications to cure the patients, exasperated from not finding the right mixture, would throw their measuring spoons in the air.

But I walked away from the desk, and as I cleaned the knocked down foliage,
the battered, yet beautiful flowers cheered me up.
I changed the blog title and told myself  "positive thinking, Chiko!"

It'll be okay.
I'm not trowing spoon nor towel!

A little glance. ;-)
