words

I am interested in anything related to gardening but
especially partial to garden related signs.

As an art student, my favorite projects were Typography designs.
That was a million years ago,
when we stained our hands with paint and ink to design things.

Which flower shall I pick to stain my hands tomorrow?

The Mayflower

My garden is not an ideal place for growing roses.

I'm not interested in those demanding hybrid tea roses, but
it is hard to resist the charm and grace of old English shrub rose.
My first one was David Austin rose 'The Mayflower'.

David Austin English Rose  'The Mayflower'

Mr. Austin has named this rose to mark the launching of his American catalog.

She gets some sun scorch and strong wind is hard on her,
but is completely free of disease and insect damage.
She blooms repeatedly all season long.

How I enjoy learning from flowers.

impose

When I went to a craft shop looking for buttons, I couldn't resist their fabric sale.

I bought a fabric with a hint of fall color and
couldn't help but wonder if it had something to do with the changes in the garden.
daisies are in full bloom
and
I'm starting to find more seed heads and fruits.

Cosmos Sonata

A short variety, good for a windy site.
She is ordinarily but still charming. Good self-sower -always comes back short -for 5yrs now.

I've gotten much better over the years with impose purchases but
craft shops and garden centers are my nemeses.
Oh, and boxes, baskets etc. for organizing.
I like them better than actually organizing.

Today, IKEA opened only 30 minutes from my house.
Oh, dear.

summer knitting

When it's too hot to garden, I knit.

This is my first project with soy yarn.
When I found this lace weight yarn in the clearance bin, they were bright orange.
Then I remembered an article about dying protein yarn with Kool-Aid.
Soy has protein!

Soy yarn is very soft almost like silk.
I choose a lace with picot edge design cardigan "Laar"
Original design was made with negative ease but I made it looser since I don't care for tight clothes.

One month later I'm thrilled with the finished project.
Soy yarn did grow vertically and I wish I made the lace part a little shorter but
I think it is still acceptable and I can wear it with pants or dress.

borage

Borago officinalis

The self-sown borage plants are growing nicely.
Her flower tastes like a cucumber.

Borage is known to have antidepressant properties and help you find courage.

I grow her mainly to attract pollinating bees.
She is considered a good companion plant for tomatoes, squash and strawberries.

Besides, how lovely it would be to find these blue flowers in your salad.

The husband made a face when he found it in his salad.

daylily

I remember seeing daililies on the roadsides as a child in Japan.
I always thought they were pretty weeds.
I was surprised to see how enthusiastic some people were about them here in U.S.

hard worker

Geranium 'Rozanne'

She is undoubtedly the hardest worker in my garden.
She blooms abundantly nonstop from June to hard frost.

It is fairly a large plant, around 18" x 18" but
she politely spreads minding manners, hugging her companions
but never smothering anyone.
Unfortunately she is sterile and even a small pot is on the pricey side.

 Dave's Garden

Someone posted a way to propagate it
by layering from a mother plant on Dave's Garden.
I can hardly wait to try it.
Oops, Rozanne is patented! Sorry!

ornamental grass

My ornamental grass collection has grown a bit. Here are some of them.

He is my favorite. I like the bluish blades and wispy plumes.

Blue Oat Grass  Helictotrichon sempervirens

He is a close second, good posture and always dependable gentleman.
He is everywhere since the landscape companies seem to be in love with him.

Feather reed grass Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'

Karl's cousin with stripes; a sensitive guy who likes shade.

Variegated feather reed grass  Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Overdam'

This bluish guy likes more drinks than others, beautiful red-purple plumes later
but why did I buy three?

Blue swtch grass  Panicum virgatum  'Heavy Metal"

He is getting a bit bossy and I need to whack him often..

  Zebra Grass  Miscanthus sinensis  'Zebrinus'

Last but not least, the newcomer.  Having a hard time in the heat.
I shall remove the gravel around him.

No frill, no scent or not much color or drama.
Maybe that's why I call them " he ".

We need them time to time.

poppy

Papaver somniferunm  'Lauren's Grape'

The question at the garden club was "what is your favorite flower?"
(who'd ask such a thing anyway?)
I'd reluctantly put down poppy.
The flower doesn't last very long and she doesn't stay still even in the slightest breeze.
Anyway, those are my excuses for the unfocused photo.

'Lauren's Grape'
'The Undaunted garden'

"Lauren's Grape" is spread through gardeners across the nation (world?)
thanks to Ms. Lauren Springer Ogden; well known Colorado plantswoman, designer and garden writer.
Her book "The Undaunted garden" is my absolute favorite.
Ms. Lauren fist started the poppy from seed scraped off from a bagel.
She then weeded out other colors after she spotted this gorgeous color.

I had almost lost it when I moved, but luckily found my old seed stash and
she greets me with her old-fashioned charm every year.

Looks like I will have many seeds to share this year.

bluebird

I have a few glazed blue pots placed in the garden.
They create focal points during the gardening season
but also add splash of color and cheer me up
when the garden stays gray and white seemingly forever.

To avoid the soil from freezing and cracking the pots in the winter,
I use some of them up-side-down, more like side tables and
they have over-winter for four years now.

Same color as the mountain bluebird.

Have you ever been visited by them?

May the bluebird bring you happiness.

lollipop

Asiatic Lily   Lilium 'lollipop'

She was supposed to be a lovely pink lily
but they must have made a packing mistake.
I was disappointed when she finally opened her face and
showed what I thought was a clown face.

Two years ago my mother visited here.

"What is that adorable flower with freckles ?"
"Which one?  The poppy, or maybe the daisy?"
"No, I think it's a lily."

The clown was promoted to a Prima donna over night.
When I glanced at her suspiciously,
she was sticking her tongue out at me.
